Born on June 2, 1939, Mr. Krishna Kumar Mishra, famously known as ‘Shyam Sadhu,’ has been serving monkeys and animals for 77 odd years now. He was born in Bermo, district of Hazaribagh of Jharkhand (then Bihar) in British India. His father Bal Bhandar Saran Mishra served as the inspector in Hazaribagh Police station. He is currently based in Raebareli district of Uttar Pradesh. He started serving animals from his teenage years and then developed the passion to help the animals who are injured, abandoned, or need any sort of medical attention. In the British era, he had a feeling of social service in his mind, he came to his uncle’s home in Varanasi at an early age. By the age of 8, he lived at his maternal uncle’s house.
As he says he initially used to steal bread and chapatis to feed these animals but later not only his family but people from all over the world started supporting him. He is known for organizing Vanarbhoj or feasts for monkeys on a daily basis. According to him, serving animals is equal to serving Lord Hanuman. He has imparted these values to his family members as well and both his daughters and their families are involved in helping animals. He is known as the ‘messiah’ for orphan animals as he never discriminates amongst them. Be it a snake, cow, donkey, bird, pig or any other animal. He brings injured and needy animals home, gets them treated and tries his best to save their lives. When the hospitals run out of space he keeps the animals at home. He has dedicated a separate ward for animals at his home. If an unfortunate incident takes place and the animal dies he performs all the last rites. Not only that, he has also made his house a graveyard. He buried many dead animals here. In a conversation with him, he said that he had a fear in his mind when he started feeding monkeys as they might bite him but when he started going and feeding them, he became their family and vice versa.
Currently he is home to a baby monkey who is blind. He found him in Bhavre Suran, a village in Nigoha where he pays frequent visits to feed the monkeys and poor children. Everyday he collects chapatis, gram and other edibles for monkeys and other animals and goes out to feed them despite poor weather conditions. He is also known for rescuing snakes and setting them free in Jungles. He is not only an animal lover but an environmentalist too. He has been the part of many plantation drives and has encouraged and educated people to grow plants. He has a passion for planting trees and gardening. He maintains his own garden known as ‘Geetanjali Herbal Garden’. Along with many states, foreign plants are also engaged in the house together with this garden. He has been able to grow trees like Coconut, Mini Lithi, Black grapes, Singapore Star Fruit, fig, clove etc. in the Northern part of the country by providing and creating favorable conditions for the same.
